► Student Parliament

Student Parliament

Representatation is a democratic right for all students at Queen Margaret University. Student Parliament is the Governing Body of the Students' Union. and it gives students the opportunity to mandate their Executive Committee to campaign on their behalf. Student Parliament looks to find solutions to the bigger problems affecting all students at QMU.

MSPs having voting rights at Student Parliament and can produce real change for students at QMU. MSPs can put forward motions which will be debated and then voted upon. Click on this link to find out more about what motions are and how to write one.

Student Parliament is one of the most innovative of representative bodies across any students' union in the UK, and it ensures that the views of students are effectively communicated to their lecturers, senior management and Executive Committee.

The University has a number of representative committees; including Staff Student Consultative Committee's, that can be used by students to put forward small personal issues to do with their course and their teaching. If an MSP feels that the University is doing nothing about these smaller issues, the MSP should contact the Student President who will be able to take matters further.

Student Parliament is structured to allow all MSPs to put forward items for agenda and to propose motions. To find out more about this look here.

MSPs are elected at the first meeting of Student Parliament in October. It may sound daunting to "run for election" but the process is very simple, you just need to be passioante and active about wanting what's best for yourself and for the students of QMU. Not all positions are filled at the first meeting, so if you miss this please still contact the Students' Union about become an MSP.

Any QMU student may attend Student Parliament and comment during discussion, however, only registered MSPs have voting rights and can put forward items for discussion.

Student Parliament is run in accordance with the Students' Union Constitution in order to make it fair and democratic.
