OXFAM GET INVOLVED CAMPAIGN

To mark World AIDS Day 2007, your Union and NUS Scotland are supporting Oxfam's call for six million more health and education workers to tackle the global crisis.

    • 33.2 million people around the world are currently living with HIV.
    • Everyday around 6,000 people die of AIDS related diseases, and it remains the primary cause of death in Africa.
    • Half of all new infections worldwide occur in young people aged 15 - 24.
    • In Scotland the rate of new HIV infections is on the increase;

Oxfam want six million people around the world to join the growing global movement demanding health and education for all. The world needs free public health care and education. The world needs six million more trained teachers and health care workers. To make this happen the world needs you. We need 6,000 Scots to achieve this target.

Please sign the '6 Million More' Pledge now.

We would ask you please to distribute this email to family, friends, colleagues and members in your institution, urging them to support the campaign by taking part in the action. The final petition will be presented to the UK Government, and students' support will help create the pressure needed to bring about global investment in services that will save lives.

Oxfam, with the Scottish Youth Parliament, is also hosting a World AIDS Day Scottish Youth Conference in Paisley on 1 December 2007. The conference is for young people aged between 14 and 25 from around Scotland and will address the HIV & AIDS epidemic from global and local perspectives. It will involve international speakers from Malawi and Kenya, input from agencies working on HIV and AIDS issues in Scotland, such as Terrence Higgins Trust and LGBT Scotland, participatory workshops, panel discussions and opportunities to take action. A few places are still available and anyone wishing to attend can register on the Scottish Youth Parliament website (www.syp.org.uk/PaisleyWAD.htm).

Thank you for your support.
