Students, along with Student Union sabbatical officers and staff, organised a protest on Friday 7th of December 2007, against Carillion, the university building contractors, to highlight to them our dissatisfaction over the building delays to our new campus.
The protest, strictly a demonstration to air our grievances over the lack of Students’ Union, Drama department, Sports centre, proper retail and catering facilities, coincided with the meeting between University management and Carillion Chief Executive, Chris Pape.
A red faced Pape was presented with the 1200 plus petitions signed by students, letters from Student Union staff and a dossier of demands.
Student President, James Wilkinson and Student Vice President, John Baxter were present at the meeting where Pape and colleagues apologised for the delays. James and John acknowledged the apologies but said it was too little too late!
Carillion were due to hand over the building on Friday 14th but again delays and faults were highlighted so it will now be early in the New Year that we are allowed access to our facilities.
Thanks to all who attend and contributed to the protest - thanks to the Student Union and Catering department for the tea, coffee, soup and biscuits - keeping us warm on a cold winters day.
