In January, 2006, QM appointed Musician In Residence, Rob MacKillop, with the task of getting staff and students together to play music. Rob quickly established various groups such as the Jazz Band, Blues Band, Traditional Music Group, Early Music Group, World Music Group and others. There was a huge uptake, and the bi-annual concerts have proved immensely popular.

Now we have relocated to a shiny new campus, it is time again to get the bands making music. In addition to the above groups, we also now have a Baroque Ensemble (Monteverdi, Vivaldi, etc) and a Recorder Group.

Your commitment will be about one and a half hours a week for ten weeks, once in each semester. There will be a ‘variety show’-style concert in December and March. Most of the groups include complete beginners, as well as those with more experience. You have no excuses not to join! The Traditional Music Group and the Early Music Group have performed at Graduation Ceremonies and at the University Title Celebration.

Most of the groups require singers, and any instrument can get involved. We also have a Guitar Group for beginners and post-beginners. We have a few (not many!) instruments for you to borrow.

If you are in a student band, Rob can help you find rehearsal space and a slot on the QMusic concerts.

Separate from the activities of QMusic is the ‘official’ Choir of Queen Margaret University, run by Choirmaster James Robertson. Contact James directly if you are interested: jrobertson@qmu.ac.uk

Rob also ran Listen At Lunch sessions, where staff and students could come and listen to music while eating lunch. Rob would ‘set the scene’ with information on the background to the recordings – everything from avant-garde funk by Miles Davis to Renaissance Scottish Music. It is hoped that Rob can find time to organise these popular sessions again.

Rob is also putting together an evening class as part of Campus Cinema, entitled Music In Film. This is scheduled to start on Thursday, 7th February. Among the topics discussed will be Taxi Driver, Psycho, Tarantino, Silent Movies and Jazz.
