 Motions

Motions are used by MSPs to mandate the Executive Committee to focus their efforts on a specific topic or area. Motions should not demand unavailable attention or use of resources but should be used to ask for added support from the Students' Union. Any MSP may put forward a motion at Student Parliament (as long as it is seconded by another MSP). The MSP will be given time to read their motion and any MSP may read against any motion. There will then be time for discussion between all MSPs and the Chair will call for a vote. A motion will only be passed by a two-thirds majority.

How to Write a Motion

Remember to put as many facts as you can in the "Student Parliament Notes" section, outline what you think should be happening in the "Student Parliament Believes" section and then what you would like done by the Executive Committee and the Students' Union in the "Student Parliament Resolves" section.

Below are examples of two motions that have gone through Student Parliament this year.
