STUDENT PARLIAMENT - QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

What is it for?

Student Parliament is Queen Margaret University's representative body for students, much like Student Council at other institutions. It is where the Students' Union is governed and where Students' Union elected officers can be mandated to campaign and represent QMU students fairly and democratically. It is also the main way in which students can give comments or complaints to the University about the quality of their education here at QM.

What do I have to do?

Sign up to be a academic representative, halls representative, Liberation representative and attend the Parliament meetings to vote on issues and be updated on information important to QM and to students nationwide. It is then your responsibilty to feed back to fellow students and take their opinions on board to bring to meetings.

How often are meetings?

6 times per academic year.

What difference does it make to me?

It means that your voice is being heard in the Students' Union and University and that you are playing a part in improving life at QM for students now and in the future. It also looks great on your CV, as employers nowadays are always looking for students with extra-curricular experience. It means that you can help get things done around QM, positive changes for years to come.

Why should I bother?

Because if you don't....who will? The Students' Union officers can only do so much without the students behind them. And if everyone decides that they can't be bothered, the University will never learn from mistakes or hear good feedback from things they are doing well. How will QM ever learn?

What is the quoracy of Student Parliament?

According to the Students' Union Constitution, the Quoarcy for Student Parliament is 20% of the entire student body or 20 people, whichever is fewer. At the discretion of the Student President, the quoracy can be lowered to 15 students.

Can any student attend Student Parliament?

All students are welcome to come along to Student Parliament and comment on the discussions. However, only registered MSPs are aloowed to put forward points for agenda and only MSPs have voting rights.
