Being the first Equality and Diversity Officer at QMU

Hello! I'm Ferdinand Fehring but you can call me Ferdi. I'm a 4th year student in PR and Media here at QMU.

Being the Equality and Diversity Officer for the Students Union is equally exciting and challenging. During the 1st semester alone I got to experience so many different things that I usually wouldn’t have been able to!

I participated in the organization of Fresher’s Week, which was thrilling but also hard work! I represented you, the student body, at the University's Equality and Diversity committee, re-evaluated the student survey for my school with my professors and many more things!

The reason why I wanted to become an Officer was because I wanted to give back to the University, by making sure that students would have as good as a time at University as I had during my time here. By being part of the Students' Union team, I have made many new friends myself and I wouldn't change it for the world!

In my manifesto I highlighted that I wanted to celebrate diversity and with ‘Split’ becoming part of Fresher’s Week and it having only gotten better and better, I’m happy that I achieved part of my goals already.

It was very fulfilling working with the other officers and even though some of the meetings with the University were a little intimidating, I managed to overcome that, which has helped me grow as a person! If you want to take over my role next year, I would recommend setting achievable goals and to highlight them in your elections campaign, so that people know what and who they are voting for.

I was the first ever Equality and Diversity officer and loosely outlined the role, now it’s your turn to raise the bar! If you have any questions or just want to chat about being an Officer, don’t hesitate to drop me a mail at 13002429@qmu.ac.uk!

We will be hosting our Extra Ordinary General Meeting on Friday 10th of February where we will be proposing changes to some of the officer roles, so make sure you come along to voice your opinion. It will also be a great opportunity to talk to the current officers to get to know more about what they have been up to and what it's like to be an officer at QMUSU.
