Why I wanted to be Marketing and Communications Officer

My name is Jenny, I'm 4th year Nutrition and I wanted to be an officer, specifically for Marketing and Communications to make sure students are aware of everything happening on their campus, by promoting events and increasing student engagement.

What I have achieved

I have been involved in frequent meetings with other officers to plan and deliver events, increased marketing this year and we have seen greater attendance at events at Maggie’s hosted by Sports and Societies. I have made a huge effort to be present at the Pop-Union stalls set up in 1875 each month. This role allowed me to engage with more students on campus and by doing so I hope I have encouraged people to interact with all aspects of the Students' Union other than just Maggie’s.

What I have gained

Being an officer this year has presented me with opportunities I otherwise would not have had. My course is not group work orientated so this role offered me the chance to develop teamwork and leadership skills in a fun environment. The officers committee brings together people from different courses and different societies, we have worked together to help plan and run Freshers' Week and QMU Round 2, and assisted societies in their fundraising events.

Overall, taking on this role this year has greatly enhanced my Student experience. I have developed skills in planning, communication and leadership which will benefit me hugely after university. Because of all this I would strongly encourage anyone to consider running to become the next Marketing and Communications Officer.

If you are interested in standing in the election keep an eye out for the announcement of the nominations in the next wee while!

Additionally there is going to be an Extra-ordinary General Meeting on the 10th of February at 1.30 to decide whether the name of this role should be changed to Student Engagement Officer, so keep your eyes peeled for any changes and come along to the EGM to make your voice heard.
