As 2018 Elections are approaching, we've asked Andy White, our current Sports Officer, about his experience as a Part-time Officer so far this year. Andy is currently in year 3 of his PR, Marketing & Events course.
Why did you choose to run for your position as Sports Officer?
Throughout my second year at QMU I became involved with volunteering with Scottish Student Sport, and that took me up to the union enough that I became curious about running for Sports Officer. I really looked forward to being able to help out the different sports teams at QMU, in whatever way I could. I’m really happy to be able to say that as a union team it’s looking like we’ll submit a report for the Healthy Body Healthy Mind award this year, one of my main objectives coming into the role.
What have you gained from your experience as a Student Officer?
I’ve gained a huge amount. I’ve made a huge number of connections, both in the sporting world and with those in the Events and PR industry, which ties well into my studies, through networking with governing bodies and other institutions as well as working with the fantastic current volunteer officers and the staff at both the Union and the University.
What advice would you give to students who are considering running in this year’s elections?
If you’re keen to get more involved, have good, bright ideas that you think could become realities, then don’t be shy and run in this year’s election, whatever post you think applies to you and interests you best is what you should run for. You have the freedom to make the role what you want. There’s nothing to lose, and I certainly don’t regret any part of it!
Nominations for 2018 Student Elections will open on Monday 12 February and will close on Friday 23 February. All info here.
