Sports update

Hi everyone, welcome to another sports update!

Before we dive into what some of our fabulous teams have been up to, I'd like to send out my best wishes and thanks for what has been the most fantastic of years for me personally. By the next time we get an update, we'll have played Varsity against Napier and there will be a new QMU Sports Officer! Varsity has extra importance this year, being the 10th anniversary of its inception, and with QMU never getting our hands on the trophy, we've taken extra steps to be as good as possible on the day across all the sports taking part. However, regardless of sporting success, it promises to be a day full of exciting battles, fun, and meeting new people- what sport is all about! Finally, I'd like to say a massive thank you to all my teams this year. From September throughout the year, it has been a pleasure meeting you all and watching you train and play so passionately in your sports. We have some truly gifted sports people at QMU, and it's been a privilege being Sports Officer. To whoever takes over from me, you're going to have the best time! Now, let's hear from our teams about what they've been up to since the turn of the year and in prep for Varsity!

Men’s Football

QMU Men’s Football kicked off 2026 in style, winning the SU Sport of the Month award - a testament to the hard work and commitment shown by the lads throughout January. We also welcomed a few new committee members for the remainder of the year and they’ve taken to their roles like ducks to water.

Semester 2 has brought a mixed bag of results so far. In the league, we secured a hard-fought win against Edinburgh University, followed by a narrow defeat away to Stirling on a pitch that could only be described as a mud bath. With one final league fixture against HW still to come, the boys are determined to build momentum heading into Varsity, before taking on that lot Napier at the end of March. In cup action, despite a 4–1 second-round defeat to Division 1 side Strathclyde in the Queen’s Park Shield, the team was proud of their performance. We pushed higher opposition all the way and certainly gave them plenty to think about.

Off the pitch, we picked up right where we left off. Highlights included a joint pub crawl with Women’s Football, a S**t Shirt Night following the Stirling away trip and a Cowboy Night to celebrate Sully’s 40th birthday. In a shock turn of events, we then had a quieter few weeks - probably needed! But don’t worry, we’ll be back in full swing with a packed schedule throughout March, all building towards the big one: Grand Ball in April.

It’s shaping up to be an exciting run-in to what has already been a fantastic year. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone over the final few months!

Ladies’ Gaelic Football

It’s been a busy few weeks for Ladies Gaelic Football! From hosting a Wig Night social to being crowned Scottish Champions for the 5th year in a row. This semester, we’ve played 3 games and brought home wins twice!! 🏆

We also teamed up with Edinburgh University GAA and hosted a hurling/camogie mixed game🇮🇪

We’re now fundraising for the upcoming Britain Championship weekend in Birmingham. We’re taking on a 480km run/walk challenge, the distance from QMU to Birmingham🏃🏻‍♀️

Training is in full swing with the Championship weekend fast approaching. Thank you to everyone who has supported us so far💙

Dance

Here is your Dance Round Up!

This month, Dance took part in three competitions and came away with some amazing achievements:

✨ Best Performer
✨ TikTok Award
✨ On the Spot Hip Hop Champion
🥇 1 First Place
🥈 3 Second Places
🥉 3 Third Places

The team absolutely smashed it and we couldn’t be prouder of every single one of them. Their hard work, commitment and energy really paid off!  Now both our Rec and Comp teams are working hard towards our show routines, which will take place on the 5th of April 2026 — so make sure to get your tickets!

More updates coming soon!

Badminton

This month we played are last two BUCs games of the season both away from home, with one at UWS and one at Napier. They were both really tough games, but everyone played well and had some fantastic games and rallies involved.

We also hosted our annual friendly with Napier for all players (social and BUCs). It was a really fun night for all, allowing for more game time for everyone. One of the finals was a really intense game ending 30-29, making a really good watch and lots of cheering going on, QMU sealed the deal in fashionable style!

The Wednesday night chaos also continued on this month. We have had Rhyme without reason, Pyjama night, and Dress as your younger self (with QMUSapphires). All social we were well attended, with pyjama night being a favourite. We also loved our joint social with Sapphires  recreating our younger self’s, if you haven’t already, you must watch their TikTok of the outcome!

We have had many new members this semester, who have become regulars at all of our events from training, socials and fundraising. They have all fitted in so well, quickly becoming a regular friendly face around badminton.

Finally we ran a fully sold out bake sale on the 10th of February to ensure the clubs funds remained healthy and helped us raise another £160!

That’s all from QMU Badminton this month, we look forward to another fun and succeful month ahead of us! #BleedBlue🩵

Netball

Netball has had a very successful month with lots of competitive games with close calls, fundraising efforts and donations to support local clubs in poverty areas.

Both competitive teams have given their all at the games and unfortunately, they have not been the results we have hoped for, but the girls left the course with their heads held high.

We hosted our burns night fundraiser at the end of January raising £150 for Macmillan Cancer Support, a charity that has touched so many of our members hearts. Our bake sale for Endometriosis UK which is a charity a lot of our members look to for support, we raised £150 again. Our annual round robin fundraiser allowed us to raise a total of £60 allowing £30 to go to each charity Macmillan and Endometriosis. Leaving the total to each charity was £180. During this month we raise £360 for 2 amazing charities.

We recently purchased new balls and decided to donate our old ones to a netball club that is providing netball to children in poverty areas. We feel everyone should have the chance to play netball and felt donating the balls and old bibs to this organisation would allow for more opportunities for them.

Finally, the recreational team has been able to organise a tournament to attend in Dundee on the 8th March and all the girls are excited for their first tournament.
