Hi! My name is Jill and I’m your elected Student Welfare Officer. I’m going into my 2nd year in this post and can’t wait to get started! Out with being a Students’ Union Officer, I’m also a 4th year Applied Pharmacology Student here at QMU!
As part of my role I work to increase the awareness of the welfare related services within the Students’ Union, University and East Lothian. I also run campaigns on issues I think are important for the students of QMU. For example last year I planned and ran QMU’s first campaign to raise the awareness of Eating Disorders around campus. This involved a talk from best selling author and anorexia survivor Tina McGuff, a help stall with contact details for different eating disorder services, a film screening and the release of several student blogs telling their personal eating disorder stories.
Another part of my role as Welfare Officer is to sit on the Student Mental Health and Wellbeing Steering Group. This is a joint working group between the University and the Union made up of representatives from the Union, University and external partners like NUS and the NHS. By being a part of this group I get to be involved in lots of different things with the aim to better student wellbeing at QMU. We look at things such as planning events for World Mental Health Day and working to promote the help on offer to students and how to access it. This group is very exciting to sit on as I am able to represent the students of QMU at a staff level.
I have lots of plans for the 2017/18 academic year including a talk during Eating Disorder Awareness Week in February on ‘Clean Eating’ and Orthorexia!
Please feel free to get in touch with me if you have any questions or need any advice!
