As the December assessments approach, it’s normal to feel the pressure, but sometimes life brings unexpected challenges. If something sudden is affecting your ability to complete an assessment or sit an exam, you may be eligible to apply for Extenuating Circumstances (EC). An EC can allow extra time to submit an essay or the opportunity to take an exam at a later date.

EC are not just for illness. They exist to support students facing any unforeseen situation that impacts their ability to perform at their best, whether it involves you directly or someone close to you. Unexpected work commitments, family emergencies, sudden health problems, or emotional distress may all be valid reasons to apply.

You can self-certify for up to seven days if you need a short extension, without providing evidence. If you need longer, or if you apply after a deadline, you will be asked to supply supporting evidence.

There is no need to feel embarrassed about applying. EC are designed to ensure that every student has a fair chance to do their best, regardless of what life throws their way.

Remember, EC cannot be used for poor planning or ongoing issues already covered by an Individual Learning Plan (ILP). To learn more, visit the official QMU EC Policy.

If you are unsure whether you qualify or need help applying, contact the HelpZone for confidential, non-judgemental advice and support.
