Are you thinking of running for Elections? Have a look at what Isabel Canepa, Student Engagement Officer, has to say about her experience.

Isabel is currently studying Business Management (Fast Track), Year 3.

Why did you choose to run for your position as Student Engagement Officer?

I chose to run for Student Engagement Officer because I value the non-academic teachings the University experience can provide as much as academics. The lifestyle you develop throughout University is what shapes our future. Engaging in SU events, sports, societies, fundraisers, Help Zone etc. is what helps students to develop thoughts and think of University as a meaningful experience. Students engaging their time and effort in educational and social activities outside of the classroom tend to have positive academic outcomes. I love being involved and being voted your Student Engagement Officer 2017-18 has allowed me to share these feelings with the rest of my student body.

What have you gained from your experience as a Student Officer?

Being a Student Officer is a great experience if you want to understand and be a part of the inner workings of the Students’ Union and meet the great staff team supporting Officers Committee, VP and President in decision making and planning. Being an Officer is challenging and exciting. In the role of Student Engagement Officer I have found it incredibly important to support and help as well as rely on the whole team to achieve goals set out at the beginning of each semester. Being a Student Officer means being part of and working with a team of dedicated people with the shared objective of continuously improving the University experience.

What advice would you give to students who are considering running in this year’s elections?

If you're thinking of running for any Officer position I would suggest you go and spend some time in the Union, chat to staff and current officers, VP and Pres at the office. Make sure you know why you want to run and think of what is achievable while in office. Everyone at the SU is really friendly and up for a chat about your thoughts and expectations to help you get a better idea of what it would be like to be an Officer.

Always make sure studies remain top of the priority list - there will be a lot of prioritising throughout the year and time management is crucial in order to succeed! If you're reading this and considering running for a position then you are already in the right mind-set to take on being an Officer 2018-19. Go for it! :)
